Tribal nuclear waste targeted
SEPTEMBER 5, 2000 Nuclear waste destined for a site on the Goshute Reservation in Skull Valley, Utha, is being targeted by Governor Mike Leavitt and Representative Jim Hansen (R-Utah). The tribe wants to store up to 40,000 tons of spent fuel from power plants all throughout the country. The tribe has already signed a lease agreement with Private Fuel Storage, a company representing eight electric utilities. But many oppose the plan. Leavitt announced a new council to help fight the proposal and Hansen said he will introduce legislation to raise liability insurance requirements on electric utilities such as PFS from $9 billion to $200 billion.
