Railroad to nuclear site approved
FEBRUARY 21, 2001 The US Surface Transportation Board has given preliminary approval to a rail line the Great Salt Lake and Southern Railroad LLC wants to build to the Skull Valley Goshute Reservation in Utah. The rail line would transport nuclear waste to a facility a consortium of private utility companies want to build on the reservation. A number of state lawmakers and officials, including Governor Mike Leavitt, oppose the plan. The 32-mile line would cost between $20 million and $35 million, Great Salt Lake estimated.
