Maine tribe worried about fish

JUNE 6, 2001

Fisheries officials in Canada released fish into a Maine river on Tuesday against the complaints of the Passamaquoddy Tribe and fishermen.

The tribe is worried that the alewives will hurt bass, smelt and salmon populations. The Canadian Department of Fisheries and Oceans says there is no evidence that would occur.

A Maine law closes a dam on the Canadian border to the fish.
