Fire engulfing historic ranch

AUGUST 16, 2000

A fire on the Wind River Reservation in Wyoming has burned 80,000 acres of the historic Arapahoe Ranch, which provides income to the tribes and is used by tribal members for ranch and farm training.

The tribes on the reservation may have to sell some of their cattle to recoup losses incurred as a result of the fire. It has burned about 25 percent of the 368,000-acre ranch.
