Suit filed to stop timber sale

WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 19, 2001

Two environmental groups on Tuesday filed suit against the U.S. Forest Service to block a sale of timber taken from a Montana forest, leading a federal judge to block temporarily the action.

The groups say the salvage logging on 46,000 acres of the Bitterroot National Forest would harm the bull trout. The fish is listed as "threatened" under the Endangered Species Act.

The forest was hit by fires in the summer of 2000 and the sale would help restore it, says the Forest Service.
