EPA proposes air quality rules

The Environmental Protection Agency has proposed rules affecting air quality on reservations in Washington, Oregon and Idaho.

The rules are intended to cover air pollution where no tribal or state plan is in place. In most cases, there is no tribal plan and state laws don't apply on Indian Country.

As a result, the EPA doesn't have a way to address various issues. The rules include a program for identifying pollution sources, emergency pollution procedures, restrictions on open burning and regulation of particulates, sulfur dioxide and emissions.
