On drilling, a defeat for Bush
FRIDAY, APRIL 19, 2002 By rejecting an attempt to open the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to oil and gas drilling, the Senate has handed President Bush a stunning defeat, the analysts are saying. It was also a setback to Republican proponents of development, writes The Washington Post. Saying efforts by Sens. Frank Murkowski (R-Alaska) and Ted Stevens (R-Alaska) "backfired," the paper says some GOPs were offended by their tactics. In yesterday's vote, eight Republicans broke with the party line to oppose drilling. Only five Democrats wanted to keep a Murkowski-authored amendment in the energy bill under debate. How They Voted:
