Meeting over Okla. water deal set

Native Women for Justice is hosting a public meeting on January 19 to discuss a proposed water compact between the state of Oklahoma and two tribes.

The compact settles the water rights of the Chickasaw Nation and the Choctaw Nation. It also involves selling water to the state of Texas.

Saying it has received numerous questions from tribal members about the deal, Native Women for Justice, a non-profit group, has asked tribal leaders to the meeting to provide more information. Choctaw Nation Chief Greg Pyle, Choctaw Nation Assistant Chief Mike Bailey, and Chickasaw Nation Gov. Bill Anoatubby have been asked to attend, said the group.

The compact has to be approved by the Oklahoma Legislature to be finalized.
