ANWR drilling could be a bust

MONDAY, MARCH 11, 2002

The Bush administration's enthusiasm for the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge isn't necessarily shared by large oil companies who are somewhat quiet about the prospects.

Test oil wells were drilled on land owned by Inupiat Eskimos but BP won't release the results. Some companies say they are more interested in international sources.

Even if ANWR were opened to development, it might no be worth the cost. Environmental groups promise to challenge drilling any way possible.

Debate over an energy bill that could include drilling continues this week. Some GOP leaders in the Senate aren't willing to risk derailing the proposition just to push an ANWR provision.
