First Nations police have broad authority

A Mi'kmaq First Nations police force has jurisdiction over the entire Nova Scotia province, a provincial court judge ruled on Thursday.

The authority of the Unama'ki police isn't just limited to the reserve, said Judge David Ryan. Relying on a swearing-in certificate issued by a justice minister, Ryan said an officer who arrested a man on a federal highway has jurisdiction throughout the province.
