More Native nurses sought
TUESDAY, OCTOBER 30, 2001 In 1998, the School of Nursing for the University of Alaska at Anchorage started a program to recruit more Alaska Natives into the nursing field. The Recruitment and Retention of Alaska Natives Into Nursing program began with $517,000 in federal grant money and recently received an additional $500,000 through the help of Sen. Ted Stevens (R-Alaska). While too early to judge the full effects of the effort, nine Alaska Natives have graduated from the school and about 60 Natives have registered as pre-nursing, with 15 to 20 already accepted.
