USDA wants bio-tech corn tests

MARCH 2, 2001

US Department of Agriculture officials on Thursday told American Seed Trade Association to report today on how much of the nation's corn supply contains a genetically engineering product not meant for human consumption.

Starlink, a product of Aventis CropScience and approved only for consumption by animals, became the focus of nationwide debate last fall when it was discovered in a number of consumer products. It prompted a recall and farmers were forced to abandon their own stocks because they had mixed StarLink in with traditionally grown corn.
