Fujimori to resign

While in Japan, Alberto Fujimori announced on Monday that he would resign as President of Peru within 48 hours.

Fujimori has faced several political crises in the past several months, beginning with the election scandal in April. Amid allegations of fraud and tampering, Fujimori was unable to win more than 50 percent of the vote running against challenger Alejandro Toledo, who hopes to be the country's first Indian President.

A run-off election was held in May, but Toledo dropped out, giving Fujimori a guaranteed win. More recently, he has lost support within the government over various corruption scandals.

New elections have been scheduled for April. Second Vice President Ricardo Marquez will be in office until then.
