Peace in Chiapas seems elusive
MAY 22, 2001
Mexicans are worried that an Indian-rights bill recently approved by Congress won't help solve persisent problems in the southern state of Chiapas, home to a seven-year-old Indian activist movement.
Violence has again erupted in Chiapas and an April 19 attack resulted in the deaths of eight Tzotzil Indians.
An estimated 2,000 Indians on Monday held a march to protest the bill passed by Congress. They said it was watered down and does not address the issues they have long raised.
