U.S. boycotts war crimes court

FRIDAY, APRIL 12, 2002

The International Criminal Court was officially created on Thursday by the United Nations.

The court was authorized by a 1998 global treaty and is official now that 66 nations have ratified the agreement. The tribunal will hear genocide, war crimes and other cases and has broad jurisdiction.

Former President Bill Clinton signed the treaty but didn't seek ratification in the Senate. The Bush administration is considering removing the United States' signature and boycotted yesterday's ceremony.
