House approves anti-terrorism bill

MONDAY, OCTOBER 15, 2001

The House on Friday approve an anti-terrorism bill simliar to one passed by the Senate earlier in the week.

Both bills increase surveillance powers of federal authorities investigating terrorist suspects. The House version, however, contains a "sunset" provision, meaning it expires after five years.

The bill was approved 337 to 79. President Bush praised its passage and it will be sent to a joint House-Senate committee to reconcile differences.
