Tribes may get seats in Legislature

NOVEMBER 27, 2000

A South Dakota state legislator is proposing to give each of the state's tribes a non-voting seat in the Legislature.

Senator-elect Ron Volesky has asked the the Legislative Research Council to look into the issue. They will look to Maine, where tribes have had legislative seats since 1820.

A similar plan has been proposed for tribes in Wisconsin.
