Sovereignty proved to be a hot topic at the the Onondaga land claims forums sponsored by the Quaker religious society. Debates at the weekly Wednesday night forum turned on what it means to be a sovereign Indian nation in the United States.

"The Indians should become equals in standing in this country, not super citizens," said Connie Tallcot co-chair of the Seneca-Cayuga chapter of Upstate Citizens for Equality.

When attorney Dario Navarro said tribal governments are often lawless governments under the jurisdiction of a corrupt BIA, Betty Lyon, of the Onondaga Nation, defended her tribe's sovereignty.
