Cherokee Nation Chief sued on car tags

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 18, 2001

Two men on Tuesday filed a lawsuit against Cherokee Nation Chief Chad Smith, saying he overstepped his boundaries by accusing them of illegally selling car tags and suing them in Oklahoma state court.

Smith had the state court stop the two men from selling the tags. The only official Cherokee tags come from the Cherokee Nation, says Smith.

The men, one of whom is a tribal member, contend they have a right to sell the tags, which do not have the same tribal seal as the Cherokee Nation.

The men filed their suit in the Cherokee Nation Judicial Appeals Tribunal, the tribe's highest court.
