Tribe supports state tax bill
JANUARY 31, 2001 John McCoy, executive director of government affairs for the Tulalip Tribes of Washington, on Tuesday testified in support of a bill that would require willing tribes to collect state tax on items they sell to non-tribal members. The tribe already has a compact to collect and hand over state tax on sales at its tribally-owned smoke shop. The bill would redirect that tax back to essential tribal governmnet services. > But other tribes who allow individual tribal members to sell goods say they might not benefit from such a practice.
