Brothertowns have many homes

MAY 24, 2001

The Brothertown Indian Nation is based in New York but its leaders live in southeastern Connecticut. Other Brothertown tribes call Wisconsin home.

But wherever the Brothertowns are, what is known is that they are descended from Mohegan and Pequot tribal members who left Connecticut and moved to New York. There, they were party to a treaty with the US government in which they were promised land but like a number of tribes, the land disappeared and the tribe was never federally recognized.

Meanwhile, some members moved to Wisconsin, whose descendants are seeking federal recongnition through the Bureau of Indian Affairs.

The New York group has been allowed to intervene in the Oneida Nation's land claim lawsuit.
