Cherokee council overrides Chief Smith

The tribal council of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma has overriden three vetoes by Chief Chad Smith. With the overrides, the council has

approved legislation that grants subpoena powers tothe council
approved the purchase of 45 acres next to the Hastings Indian Hospital in Tahlequah for $540,000
made the council the recipient of funding from the Cherokee Nation Housing Authority

The overrides were the first since Smith took office in August 1999.
