Casino pitch receives tepid welcome

Two Connecticut legislators who met with the Eastern Pequot Tribe on Thursday said the tribe's proposal to build a casino in New London faces opposition from some lawmakers.

Legislators in and around the New London area have expressed doubts about the proposal to build a casino at the Adm. Harold E. Shear State Pier. At least one state official said the tribe should pay the state $43 million to reimburse the state's investment at the pier.

The tribe has received prelminary recognition. Should it receive a final positive determination, the tribe would have to negotiate a compact with the state before opening a casino.
