New Mohawk casino deal rumored

WEDNESDAY, JULY 18, 2001

New York Governor George Pataki (R) is negotiating with the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe for an off-reservation casino in the Catskills but says a deal is nowhere near finalized.

The deal is said to be similar to the one Pataki announced with the Seneca Nation. Pataki wants to finalize a compact with the tribe but the deal is being held up by Democrats in the Assembly.

The St. Regis Mohawk Tribe last year won federal approval for an off-reservation casino in the Catskills. But after the tribe switched gaming partners and chose a new location for the facility, they had to resubmit a new land-into-trust application.
