New N.M. compacts questioned

MARCH 27, 2001

Frank Chaves, executive director of the New Mexico Indian Association, on Monday said the state's recently approved gaming compacts could be threatened if Governor Gary Johnson (R) approves a law increasing the number of slot machines at racetracks.

Chaves said the 11 gaming tribes who pushed for the compacts want to see them approved by the Department of Interior. But he said he was unsure if tribes would continue to support them should Johnson sign into law a bill which increases racetrack slot machines from 300 to 750.
