Anti-casino group fined

The Nebraska Accountability and Disclosure Commission on Friday fined Nebraskans Against Expanded Gambling $1,500 for failing to disclose its source of income.

The group was founded to oppose expanded gaming in the state, portraying themselves as a home-grown, grass roots movement. But the group failed to disclose that $40,000 of the $42,000 they raised was actually donated by Iowa casinos opposed to gaming on Nebraska reservations or expansion of gaming.

The Omaha World-Herald explored the group's finances and discovered the donations. The paper also conducted an unscientific survey of those whom the group claimed were members and many said they had no idea the were being listed as members.

The group has since dissolved.

The state does not allow Class III gaming but various lawmakers have been trying to introduce legislation to amend the state's constitution. The Santee Sioux Tribe has a Class III facility but has defied court orders to shut it down.
