Rush is on for N.Y. casinos

MONDAY, DECEMBER 17, 2001

Tribes will get the right to own and operate six casinos in New York but that doesn't mean others won't have a piece of the action.

With the lucrative market in the New York City metropolitan area not yet fully tapped, casino contractors and gaming companies stand to gain from the boom. Efforts to win tribal business have stepped up ever since the Legislature approved the negotiation of six casinos by Gov. George Pataki (R).

Three are to be located in western New York and owned by the Seneca Nation. The other will be located in the Catskills region near New York City.
