Political parties raise record funds

TUESDAY, JULY 10, 2001

With the threat of campaign finance reform looming, both Democrats and Republicans have reported record fund-raising efforts over the past few months.

The Democratic National Committee said it raised $23.5 million in the first six months of 2001. The Republican National Committee has collected at least $40.5 million as of the end of May and will have six-month figures available soon.

The House is beginning to debate campaign finance reform this week. But unlike the Senate, who passed a version banning soft money after weeks of debate, the House is limiting consideration to one day, this Thursday.

Of the proposals under consideration, a bill by Reps. Christopher Shays (R-Conn.) and Marty Meehan (D-Mass.) to ban soft money and limit issue advertising is most similar to the version which passed the Senate.
