State GOP to investigate leader

DECEMBER 7, 2000

The Washington state Republican Party is launching an official investigation into the spending habits of its leader who earlier defended a party resolution calling for the termination of tribal governments.

The party will hold an emergency meeting tonight to discuss Chairman Don Benton's apparent failure to disclose that as much as $1.5 million in state GOP funds went unspent. Party members say the money could have helped defeated candidates, including Senator Slade Gorton.
