Fla. election report criticized

JUNE 6, 2001

The two Republican-appointed members of the US Civil Rights Commission on Tuesday voiced objections to a draft report critical of Florida officials during last year's contested Presdiential election.

The two say the report's contents are not supported by the facts or testimony heard when the commission conducted its hearings into the matter. They also were angry the draft was leaked to the media.

Chairwoman Mary Frances Berry, appointed by President Bill Clinton, dismissed their charges. She wants to meet with Attorney General John Ashcroft to investigate the problems the commission identified.

The panel is to vote on Friday whether to accept the draft.
