Tribe challenged by own law firm

In February, the Mississippi Band of Choctaws of Louisiana became the first tribe in the nation to own a new car dealership.

But their "no lemons" policy is being challenged by non-Indian car dealers. Guess who these businessmen hired?

Former senator and tribal foe Slade Gorton.

It gets better. The tribe's law firm is Preston, Gates & Ellis, whose services have helped the tribe maintain a high political profile.

That's exactly what attracted the non-Indians to the firm. Well that and Gorton, who joined the legal team last year.

So when Gorton showed up in Mississippi to testify against the Choctaw business before a state vehicle commission, the tribe wanted him recused, citing an "attorney-client" relationship. The board's hearing officer agreed, but then quickly changed his mind and allowed Gorton to present his opposition.
