Oneida Nation update

AUGUST 7, 2000

ON TAXES:
Oneida County Executive Ralph Eannace Jr says its the federal government's fault for not strengthening states' ability to collect taxes on goods sold to non-Indians. The Appellate Division of the New York Supreme Court said the state can legally refuse to collect taxes.

ON HEALING:
Award-winning songress Joanne Shenandoah took part in a healing ceremony for members of the nation. Shenandoah has been part of a movement protesting unfair imposition of Oneida Council laws on tribal members.

ON SCHOOL GRANTS:
The Oneida Nation continues to give money to local school districts in which it owns land, bringing to a total $1.8 million since 1996. The Nation, however, cut off payments to Oneida County because the county has threatened to foreclose property on which it says the Nation is delinquent.

ON ANTI-ONEIDAS:
The Upstate Citizens for Equality, a group of local landowners opposed to the Oneida Nation, meet tonight at 7PM. They are affiliated with Citizens for Equal Rights Alliance (CERA), an anti-treaty rights, anti-sovereignty group.

On its web page, CERA claims that "the press and Indians tribes" have misinterpreted the recent Washington State Republican Party resolution calling for the termination of "non-republican" tribal governments.
