Minnesota artist dies
One of Minnesota's most distinguished and beloved artists died yesterday. George Morrison, an Ojibwe born near the Grand Portage Indian Reservation, was best known for a series of paintings called the "Horizon." He was hailed by Native artists as a pioneer and forerunner to contemporary Native art. After high school, Morrison won a scholarship to the Minneapolis School of Art. He then moved to New York City, where he studied at the Art Students League He also spent a year in Paris as a Fulbright scholar, taught painting at the Rhode Island School of Design for s even years, and taught at the University of Minnesota for about 15 years.
