Congressman wants to keep mascot

AUGUST 31, 2000

House majority leader Dick Armey (R-Texas) said the University of North Dakota should keep its "Fighting Sioux" nickname.

The mascot has been the focus of an effort to change the name, which some see as offensive. A new logo created by a Native artist was unveiled last year.

Armey is an alumni of the school.
