Meeting held on Hiawatha statue
OCTOBER 25, 2000 The city of La Crosse, Wisconsin, held a meeting to help decide on the future of a statue depicting an Indian. Many said the Hiawatha statue, which was erected in the 1960s, is a racial stereotype. One person wondered why no statues are made of Indians with doctorates.
