Native women honored for work

MONDAY, MARCH 25, 2002

Seven Native American women were honored for their contributions to their tribes at a ceremony in Montana this past Saturday.

The Pretty Shield Foundation, a group based in Billings, asked tribal leaders from the state's reservations to nominate the honorees. The following women were chosen:

Anne Standing Woman Hancock, Assiniboine from the Fort Peck Reservation, recognized for her work to improve health care.
Wanda Martinez, Northern Cheyenne, for her work to register more Natives to vote.
Randeen Fitzpatrick, Crow, for her work in housing and social services.
Joyce Castillo, from the Fort Belknap Reservation, for her community service and dedication to elders.
Marilyn Parsons, Blackfeet, for her work in the tribe's natural resources department.
Teresa Wall-McDonald, from the Salish-Kootenai Tribes, for her social service.
Mary Lodge Poll, Chippewa Cree from the Rocky Boy's Reservation, for her commitment to tribal traditions.
