Havasupai Tribe files $50M suit over misuse of blood
Tuesday, March 16, 2004

The Havasupai Tribe of Arizona has filed a $50 million suit in state court alleging misuse of tribal members' blood samples.

The suit is in addition to a $25 million claim filed by individual tribal members. Both suits say researchers at Arizona State University didn't gain permission to use the blood samples for studies on inbreeding, schizophrenia and theories about ancient human population migrations to North America.

Between 1990 and 1994, tribal members gave more than 400 samples. They were told the samples would be used for diabetes studies, the suits allege.

The lawsuits name ASU, the Arizona Board of Regents and three ASU professors.
