S.C. tribal groups can apply for state recognition
Tuesday, July 29, 2003

Earlier this month, South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford signed into law a bill that sets up criteria to recognize tribes.

Tribal groups can seek recognition through the state Commission on Minority Affairs. Petitioners must demonstrate historical presence in the state for the past 100 years and must have at least 150 members.

The Catawba Nation is the only tribe in the state with federal recognition. Other groups, including the Beaver Creek Indian Tribe, the Chicora-Waccamaw Tribe and the Chalokwa Chickasaw Tribe, are seeking state and federal status.
