Appeals court nominee blocked by filibuster
Friday, August 1, 2003

Senate Democrats successfully blocked another one of President Bush's judicial nominees on Thursday as Republicans claimed the nominee is the victim of anti-Catholic prejudice.

Alabama attorney general William H. Pryor Jr. is nominated for a spot on the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals. Democrats say his views are too far outside the mainstream and that he inserts his personal beliefs into his legal work.

The 11th Circuit hears cases affecting tribes in Alabama and Florida. It ruled favorably on the Miccosukee Tribe's Everglades case that is now before the Supreme Court.
