Ceremony to commemorate Nez Perce battle
Friday, August 1, 2003

The Nez Perce Tribe of Idaho today will welcome horse riders to the Bear Paw Battlefield in Montana, the site where Nez Perce Chief Joseph surrendered after fleeing from Army forces.

The U.S. government tried to force the tribe from its ancestral territory in 1877, prompting the tribe to embark on a 1,300-mile journey to Canada. The Army caught up to the tribe at Bear Paw, 40 miles away from Canada.
