Owner of Duroville agrees to make improvements
Tuesday, August 5, 2003

The owner of a trailer park on the Torres-Martinez Reservation in California agreed ot make improvements in order to prevent a judge from shutting down the facility.

Harvey Duro Trailer Park, dubbed "Duroville," sits on allotted Indian land within the reservation. It houses an estimated 2,000 to 4,000 people, mostly migrant workers and their families. The mini-town reportedly includes two used-car lots, a market, a restaurant and a financing business

Critics and federal prosecutors contend the park is an environmental and safety hazard. U.S. District Judge Robert Timlin refused the government's request for an injunction but told park owner Harvey Duro Sr. to make a number of improvements by September 3.
