Zuni Pueblo spent millions to protect sacred site
Thursday, August 7, 2003

Zuni Pueblo in New Mexico spent millions over two decades to protect a sacred lake from nearby development.

The battle effectively ended Monday when an Arizona utility dropped plans to mine for coal near Zuni Salt Lake. Tribal leaders and their allies are celebrating the decision, which was unexpected and came after the Bush administration gave its approval for the mine.
