Tribe hopes victory on sacred site will help others
Friday, August 8, 2003

Zuni Pueblo leaders said their successful battle to protect a sacred site will have an impact throughout Indian Country.

The tribe and its supporters are celebrating a decision by a utility company not to mine for coal near the sacred Zuni Salt Lake. Gov. Arlen Quetawki didn't believe the news when he heard it. I said I have to see it in writing," he was quoted as saying by the Associated Press.

The tribe worked with other tribes and national environmental and conservation groups to lobby against the mine. The tribe says the lake has to be protected permanently.
