Welch, Native writer, remembered as one of the greats

James Welch, a member of the Blackfeet Nation, died Monday of a heart attack at his home in Montana. He was 62.

Welch was considered one of the premiere Western writers. He frequently used Indian subjects in his works, garnering awards from The New York Times and The Los Angeles Times. He wrote both fiction and non-fiction.

Welch's last book was "The Heartsong of Charging Elk," published in 2002.
