Meskwaki Tribe's school seeks protection from BIA
Friday, August 15, 2003

The administrator for the school on the Meskwaki Reservation in Iowa is asking the Bureau of Indian Affairs and the county sheriff for help.

The school has been the site of protests by supporters of the tribal council led by Homer Bear Jr. The administrator has been working with rival leader Alex Walker Jr. in order to open the school on time for classes next week.

Walker is the BIA recognized leader of the tribe. The school wouldn't have had enough funds to operate unless it worked with Walker. Bear supporters want the administrator to step down.
