Editorial: Indian Country needs economic development
Monday, August 18, 2003

Economic development on reservations is the solution to problems Indian Country faces, The Sioux Falls Argus Leader says in an editorial.

The paper cites a recent report from the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights that tells Indian people "what they already knew: The federal government underfunds Native American programs."

The paper hopes the report will have an impact on federal agencies and members of Congress. But it adds: "Let's be honest. The situation has been around for a long time. The truth is that there isn't much interest in fairness or in treaties among those serving in Congress."
