Buffalo shields returned to Navajo Nation
Monday, August 18, 2003

The National Park Service has returned three buffalo shields to the Navajo Nation.

The shields were hidden in Utah in the 1860s to prevent them from falling into non-Indian hands. They were uncovered in 1926 in what is now the Capitol Reef National Park in Utah.

The shields were handed over to a Navajo medicine man in a ceremony this month.
