Mormon Church thanks Ponca Tribe for saving lives
Tuesday, August 19, 2003

The Ponca Tribe of Nebraska was honored by the Mormon Church for saving the lives of 400 Mormons more than 150 years ago.

The tribe was presented with a wooden plaque for taking in settlers in during the winter of 1846-47. Some 23 Mormons had died and more could have died without the tribe's help.
