Santa Fe Indian Market getting underway

The 82nd annual Santa Fe Indian Market is expected to attract tens of thousands of visitors this weekend.

The two-day market features 1,000 artists representing more than 80 tribes. It is the largest Indian art event in the world.

About 12 Native youth will get their chance in the spotlight at the Youth Indian Market. Three were chosen as Youth Fellowship Winners and will be honored tomorrow night at the Governor�s Mansion.

The Southwestern Association for Indian Arts will present Lifetime Achievement Awards to four artists at the reception. The late Lucy Lewis of Acoma Pueblo; the late Jose Rey Toledo of Jemez Pueblo; Matilda Thomas of the Tohono O�Odham Nation and Harrison Begay of the Navajo Nation are being recognized for their contributions to the Indian art world.

During the weekend, several artists will demonstrate their crafts. Patricia Michaels, a fashion designer from Taos Pueblo; Brent Brokeshoulder, a Hopi woodcarver; jewelers Ray and Peggy Lovato of Santo Domingo Pueblo and potter Anita Suazo of Santa Ana Pueblo are featured this year.

Dozens of other events wil also take place from today through Sunday. The Santa Fe New Mexico has a list of gallery openings and non-SWAIA happenings.
