S.D. tribe negotiating with National Park Service
Thursday, August 21, 2003

The National Park Service has halted a fossil dig as it negotiates with the Oglala Lakota Tribe over management of the Badlands National Park in South Dakota.

The tribe doesn't want the park service to disturb remains at the site of the last Ghost Dance. The fossil dig is occurring near the Stronghold Table, where tribal ancestors gathered after the Wounded Knee Massacre of 1890.

The park service is worried about looting of valuable dinosaur bones. University of Colorado professor Charles Wilkinson is working with both sides to come to an agreement.
